SMRC households receive FREE home energy assessment
SMRC's Climate Wise® team is supporting hundreds of households with FREE home energy assessment. Trained energy assessors are sent out to the interested households who have made an earlier appointment. The households are very keen to know if they are using energy efficiently at their homes and what are the further energy related cost saving opportunities. Each assessment takes about an hour and the assessor looks through the energy consuming appliances, discusses the energy bills and recommends how the household can make more saving on energy bills.
By the end of June 2009, more than 150 households have received this home energy assessment and the project aims to help another 150 households by December 2009.
This project is supported by the Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO).
SMRC received $44,173 grant from SEDO for community project
Climate Wise® program has received $44,173 from State Government's Sustainable Development Energy Office (SEDO) under the community project grant program to help 750 households of SMRC region improve their energy efficiency as well as increase uptake of renewable energy. These households showed interest in an earlier project (named Climate Actions) to receive energy saving information. This project will provide further information to these households helping them take measures to improve their energy efficiency as well as install renewable energy systems. The Climate Wise® project has noticed through different research projects undertaken in the past that households are keen to improve energy efficiency however, lack of knowledge and support prevent them doing so. Therefore, this project is expected to boost the take-up of energy efficient and renewable energy technologies across the Southern Metropolitan region.
In addition to providing information, this project will also offer the households a walk-through home energy assessment. A panel of specialists will visit the households who show their interest to identify the potential areas of energy saving and advise them how they can implement the idea with least cost. The project will award the households who achieve best energy efficiency at the end of the project in December 2009. The project will help ongoing reduction of greenhouse gases form the participating households. It is estimated that over a 5 year period, the project would reduce more than 7,000 tonnes of greenhouse gas which is equivalent to 1,800 medium sized cars off the road. In addition to greenhouse gas saving, the project will also help the households save money on their energy bills, reduce peak demand for electricity and encourage long term community involvement in combating climate change.
The program will be implemented from January to December 2009 in the Climate Wise partner Councils - City of Canning, City of Cockburn, Town of East Fremantle, City of Fremantle, Town of Kwinana and City of Rockingham.
The project was implemented by the Southern Metropolitan Regional Council (SMRC), with the support of the State Government’s Sustainable Energy Development Office (SEDO) through a regional partnership of Cities of Canning, Cockburn, Fremantle and Rockingham, and Towns of East Fremantle and Kwinana.
Climate Change Risk Assessment Workshop
The Climate Change Risk Assessment Workshop of the LAPP project held on 18 November 2008 at Cockburn Wetland Education Centre. The full day workshop was attended by about 20 officers from six participating Councils and SMRC. The workshop helped identify the risks for the local governments associated with Climate Change. Workshop was facilitated by GHD Pty Ltd. The outcome of the workshop will be available soon. .
The program is supported by the Federal Government’s Department of Climate Change.
